Shortly after the formation of Caballeros in 1999, it was determined that a small ensemble of 12–15 singers was needed as an adjunct to the chorus for two reasons:
Originally called The Choirboyz, the group was renamed Los Amigos in 2004 with the coming of Artistic Director, Alan Scott. Scott also determined that all positions in Los Amigos would be auditioned annually in order to continually develop a harmonic musical blend and small ensemble skill level that afforded Scott and Los Amigos the opportunity to perform even more challenging music pieces. Singers must be Caballeros members for one year before auditioning for Los Amigos, and Scott also requires that each member make a commitment to Los Amigos for one year if accepted.
Los Amigos singers have separate rehearsals throughout the season before the full-chorus rehearsals and must learn a number of complex songs and routines in addition to the chorus pieces in preparation for each concert. The hard work is paying off as Scott was quoted after the Two to Tango concert as saying “the Los Amigos sound has become more refined, better blended, and more musical than ever before.”
